Karate is a martial art that originated in Okinawa during the Ryukyu Dynasty period. It spread throughout Japan during the 1920s and then worldwide following World War II. It is predominantly a striking, kicking and punching art. Broadly speaking, Karate competition consists of Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring).

It is not only an excellent form of self-defence but also a fun method of staying fit and healthy. Karate is a useful method of developing strength, agility and stamina as well as an excellent way of honing mental skills and developing discipline.

Choose a club within easy travel distance. Find one that offers a free trial. The best, or safest club to choose would be one that practises a style that is popularly well-known almost everywhere in the world. If you choose a club, or practise a style, which is 'rare', or unknown, you are limiting yourself; especially if you decide to leave the area, or the club closes down, and you wish to continue training.

Ask about what extra costs there will be after you join, but most important ask to see their Insurance, qualifications, DBS certificates. These should be at hand at ALL times.

No! Although Karate is often thought of as violent, the philosophies behind Karate revolve around peace, harmony and self-control. The moves are more of a way to become connected with your body.

You will be taught evasive and defensive techniques, however, if a violent situation ever arises in your life, you'll have powerful tools to defend yourself and your loved ones.

Certain cultures and religious-superstitions may restrict participation in traditional Japanese Karate. Due to the traditional respectful bowing procedures, etiquette and ceremonies required, All participants are required to bow within the Dojo environment; please consider this before training in Karate.

Is Rei (the bow) Religious?

The answer to that is simply a difference between 'respect' and 'worship'. In Karate there is NO worship, just mutual respect; so there would be NO conflict with any religious ideals or beliefs. In Japan bowing is also a common way of saying thank you, please, in offering something, when one apologises or even requests something, etc.

This is probably the most asked question by many people, and our usual reply would be, "how long is a piece of string?" To get to what traditionalists consider an 'authentic' black-belt level takes many years of practice. Also, the minimum age to attain this level would be around 12 years of age; although very few at this age accomplish this due to demanding requirements. However, if you train twice or more a week, pass all the progression grades, it is possible to be able to attain black-belt level after a little over three years dedicated practise. Realistically though, the average time is around 5 years.
